I was wondering why exactly we need a farmer's almanac. Not that I have a problem getting one, but I was wondering if it was only going to be used to keep track of moon phases. (If so, I have a desktop gadget that gives me the moon phase in real time)

The farmer's almanac is only listed specifically for one exercise (Day 17) that I can see. The whole point being to keep up with the changing of seasons, moon and sun cycles..."knowing the luminaries and their rhythms." I don't think it's something you'd miss out on if you skipped because there are other free sources for that info like widgets and other sites. There is an online farmers almanac as well: www.almanac.com/

Okay. I was just wondering if the only thing it was used for was moon phases, because it seemed kinda pointless to buy the book just for that, when I can get the information just by opening my computer.

I always keep one handy for myself, regardless of this course for the simple fact there there are great articles on planting/seeding/etc and pretty accurate predictions of changing weather. I think the point of it is to get you in tune with the moon cycles, but like I said in the course, this was originally intended for super beginners who have little to no experience whatsoever. I always buy one every year anyway because I love the articles and the book is like $4.

~Sorry i had to post the simplest things and some of the most informative things I can get from an Almanac along with the seasons, seeding, moon cycle, sun cycles....
How to Verify Your Age: If you're really bored sometime, try this.... *Write down your age. *Multiply by 2 and then add 5 *Multiply that by 50 *Subtract 365 *Add the loose change in your pocket under $1.00 *Add 115 *The first two figures in the resulting number are your age *The last two are the change in your pocket. (I know I am retarded ;0 lololol but it is one of the smallest things I could find in here.)
I also get out of this almanac the PH Preferences for trees/shrubs, vegetables, flowers....I am a Green Witch so these things become great knowledge! Yes I can get all of this off of my computer but here is one thing I don't have, a printer! So having this little handy dandy book with me when I am out purchasing plants or soil has been a blessing! I buy one every year for all these reasons and more! If none of this interest you and you really do not see the point to purchase one then don't! Like TigerMoonShell said it is online but check one out sometime, they are really neat little books! I always find mine at the smallest groceries stores due to all the farmers around my town. Blessings Robin! )0( )

I do have a problem with this and as I can see with most of the class but I still want to try it. I'm from South America and things are a LITTLE different around here when it comes to this kind of things u.u

I'd say they are not crucial. But they can be handy. And Trisha, don't worry about it!! lol You don't need a Farmer's Almanac. But are you referring to being in South America or in the Southern Hemisphere? Because there are several people from the Southern Hemisphere on here.

And as far as the type, I usually get "The Old Farmer's Almanac." It's like a yellow color and the year is usually in red lettering. Looks sort of colonial (as far as cover art). I'm too lazy to walk to my bedside table and tell the actual publisher's name... lol

I've been looking and looking and I can't get one...the only thing in any way similar is a weather almanac and I refuse to buy it because A, it's $45 NZ and B the man who wrote it had to go into hiding as he 'predicted' a number of big quakes for my city (right when we were dealing with the aftermath of the Feb quake this year that killed 181 people) Naturally his 'predictions' were a load of BS but he terrified hundreds of people and caused people to stockpile food and petrol.

Those, who have android phones, I'd suggest free app named Lunafaqt. It gives you the information on the size of the Moon on the current position, it's distance, azimuth, height, age, where it rizes, where it sets and what sunsign it is under. It also gives you the information on when twilight starts, when the sunrise and sunset takes place and when twilight ends. Not to mention the wigget you can keep on site all the time and Moon calendar. Best one I've found so far that you don't need to pay for. I do agree that Farmer's Almanach would be better if you also do the planting, but as planting season here doesn't start before another half a year, I don't think I'll be getting it for now. Especially as there is new one coming out soon. But if the only purpose for us to get it at this time is to familiarize ourselves with the movements of the Moon and the Sun, then I think this would work just as well .
