Being a frugal witch, I whole heartedly believe in using magical substitutions. Does anyone else plan on using subs for some of the more expensive supplies that may only be used once or twice (EOs come to mind since they can be expensive)? The Complete Book of Incense, Oils, and Brews by Cunningham has a section on substitutions that I use lot.

I am the same, a frugal witch for sure! x) I actually call myself a "dollar store witch" haha, most all of my magical items are from nature/the dollar store or a thrift store. I know at some point in the year and a day activities substitions will happen lol essential oils as you said I will definately be looking out for substitution options. I don't actually have that book by Cunningham [it's on my wishlist though x)], but I'm sure I can find some substitution list on the web. If you want to share substitution options here when they come up that would be awesome too xD. Substitutions in my mind are 100% as good, as intention is the most important thing anyways.

Dollar Store Witch!! Love it! Thats where I get my tools/supplies too. Goodwill (the only thrift store around), dollar stores, and walking in the park or woods. :-) I would love to share subs I find, incase anyone else is in the same boat as me (cheapy/thrifty/broke? lol). And, anyone else thats wants to share, would be awesome. :-)

Any suggestions for substitutions would definitely be appreciated. I'm on a budget too! I still have some stuff from last year which will help for the first month or so.

Dittany of Crete is a component in the later exercises. I can't seem to find this very easily in shops where I can group with other supplies to save money. =(

SUBSTITUTIONS FOR MAGICAL PURPOSES: www.joellessacredgrove.com/Herbs/subs.html*Rosemary can be substituted for any other herb *Rose can be substituted for any other flower *Frankincense can be substituted for any gum resin *Copal can be substituted for any gum resin *Tobacco can be substituted for any poisonous herb DITTANY OF CRETE-Gum Mastic Closely related to marjoram and oregano, dittany has the distinctive oval oregano leaf shape, with hairy leaves and small pink to lavender flowers. I wonder if oregano would work too?

I just finished going through the list to see what I can get and what not. I can't order anything outside the country (I don't own credit card), which means I must work harder to find local replacements.
Dittany of Crete is certainly one problem causer, but I fear the Gum Mastic isn't much better option, but I'll have to search around first. Perhaps I can get the gum instead. Oregano would have been what I've would oped for, too. After all- they are the same family.
It's hard to find the orris root. Probably my own fault - had I known about this course earlier, I would have had time to get it and process it. I wonder if any iris germanica would work or is it only the Florentina that does the trick? If it could be replaced, I still have time to work the roots. I'll get myrrh just in case.
Mullein leaves - this one I suspect I have very little chance to find. The season for it has ended and so far I've had no luck finding it from herbalists. On the other hand - as it's needed in two months and we need leafs (can't wait for the book to arrive to see exactly why we need it!), I'm thinking if I could grow it in the pot?
Mandrake on other hand is something I fear I haven't found equivalent yet. Any suggestions?

Question for students, who have done Day 58 before: Looking at the items needed for it, please put my mind at ease that we are not consuming the mandrake?

I can't believe it, but after going to five different metaphysical shops I finally found Dittany of Crete today. They had a GIANT jar full of it and it was only a dollar an ounce. Hope it's the real stuff, after searching so much it seemed too good to be true lol.
I don't have the book yet, but does it state why 5-6" candles must be used instead of 4 inchers ?(which are easier to get 'round these parts)

Day 58 does NOT ask for you to consume mandrake.
About the candle size the book says: "I recommend 5- to 6-inch taper candles simply because you can find them almost anywhere, and they don't take nearly as long to burn as the average 10-inch taper."
So you can really use whatever you already have or can get to a certain extent. I think Charlie even said Pat would be selling votives in his store instead of tapers. She mentions in the list that some lessons specifically you could even use a birthday candle for. The other really need a bigger candle to really carry out the whole point of the exercise. I wouldn't get too riled up over 4" vs. 6" though.

I used 4" candles last year. I actually found then easier to find.

Thank you, TigerMoonShell . Just knowing that it can be consumed in order to bring up hallucinations made me wonder of it.

I was wondering if one can replace one herb they are missing with several that together represent the same thing? Like if a plant stands for love and cherish, you could make a mix instead out of one that stands for love and the other for cherish?
